It is all about family. This family had a home in Hawaii so generations of family memories revolved around the island of Maui. The home had been sold and trips there were still made; however we wanted that setting at home for children to play, relax and for the new grandchildren as well. The desired solution was a lazy river, spa, play pool, swim up bar and awesome waterfalls in a tropical setting in a small backyard.
An island was created two foot higher then the surrounding patio with boulder coping on all sides. This gives the organic appearance from all sides. Flagstone coping was on all sides of the outer edge. This allows access to walk the outside of the river on all sides. Two arched bridges allow access to the island. The spa bridge allows direct access into the double benched spa. The top benches water depth was six inches and the second was split at 18 inches and 21 inches. This allowed larger size without large heating time. One large family gather 12-15 people can sit around in the varied levels. It was also designed to appear as an upper pool in the waterfall. The waterfall has a two pump system which allows control over the cave face, the cave back to the river or into the spa. Another pump controls the rainfalls from the bridges which also provide a cooling ride on the hot float around. Two 10 horsepower river pumps provide varying speeds for the ride from fast to slow; specifically placed for the swiftest current in the main pool allowing basketball and float ride to occur at the same time. Floating can be thirsty business so 3 sets of coolers were built with matching trash bins in the pool coping. A bath was converted from the end stall with a walk in steam shower, dry sauna, toilet and sink. Tumbled Versailles pattern travertine in the bath capped the existing porch and new patio areas. Flagstone was used on the bridge paving and steps for more traction. The swim up bar was provided in the cave with granite counter and stools. Drystacked flagstone matching the bridge was used on the cave interior. A matching granite shelf provided a place for all of the plastic liquor bottles. The cave speaker, river speaker and underwater speakers are controlled from the audio cabinet built in with the outdoor kitchen. Flat screen televisions were mounted on the porch and above the fireplace to provide a good view from almost every spa seat. The outdoor kitchen was redone with matching stonework installed. A vent was added over the grill with a stone veneer. The fireplace opening was too small so a new firebox was installed and re-veneered in matching stone. Gas heaters were added to the porch ceiling. The ceiling was refinished in tongue and groove cedar. Low voltage lights and automated gas powered tiki torches provide a stunning night time view from inside or out. Pockets were provided with no underground lines for planting of the large palms and bananas. Two large oaks were transplanted to provide backdrop and allow the project to fit. Tropical planting softens the rock work and will provide the Maui flavor that was desired. The only problem is, at the come and going gatherings nobody wants to leave the Maui River.
