Claffey Pools Winterizing Tips/Tricks & When They Should Be Used!

Winter is coming, and if Texas freezes have taught us anything, it’s the importance of being prepared!

During the freeze of 2021 Claffey Pools repaired over 900 freeze-related issues and we learned a lot in that busy season! We are proud to say that we have perfected the Texas freeze preparations and we are here to help you do the same! To help prep your backyard oasis, we developed this blog to give you a quick education on your pool’s freeze guard and what to do if it fails.

Important Note: You will only need to winterize if your freeze guard fails or you expect to lose power for an extended period of time.

Your freeze guard on your pool equipment should kick on, but in case of freeze guard failure or power loss for an extended amount of time, Claffey Pools has developed Winterizing Guides with step-by-step instructions on what to with the pool equipment during freezing temperatures. Remember, the primary goal is to keep the water in the system flowing. In the event the water is not able to flow because of a loss of power or mechanical failure, it is important to winterize pool equipment!

Customers with gas heaters on the pool equipment may choose to turn the heater on to help maintain the actual water temperature at or above 40 degrees.

Understanding Winterization:

What is “Freeze Guard”?

Our “Freeze Protection” is a device that exists on all Claffey Pools. Freeze protection engages as ambient air approaches freezing temperature by providing the electricity required to run the pump(s). It will continue to run until such time as the temperature rises above the freezing temperature threshold.

What is “Winterizing”?

To “winterize” is to drain the water out of a component such as a pump, filter, sanitizer, heater, chiller, or other pool equipment. You will only need to winterize if you expect to lose power for an extended period of time.

Why is winterizing important?

When pool equipment is not treated and drained properly during a harsh freeze, leaks, cracks, and overall damage can occur that will need to be immediately restored/replaced for the pool to have full functionality and operate correctly.
